Course Objectives:
This course offers an overview of several styles of Modern Dance from Martha Graham to Alvin Ailey. Students will understand the artistic process which allows movement to rise to the level of performance through technique classes, various dance routines, watching video and live performances, discussions and note-taking exercises. The exhilarating classes are geared to getting one fit and flexible while teaching about an important area of the performing arts today.

Prerequisites: none
Requirements:
1. Attendance is crucial as it is the basis for all improvement.
2. Knowledge of the Modern Dance movement vocabulary used in class and an ability to perform exercises correctly, as taught.
3. Effort toward skill improvement through the integration of the teacher's corrections.
4. Ability to perform beginning level Modern Dance combinations with counts and to perform them from memory.
5. Ability to analyze combinations and write them in note form.
Grading:
 IF FOR SOME REASON YOU CANNOT COMPLETE THIS COURSE YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR DROPPING THE CLASS. IF YOU DO NOT OFFICIALLY DROP THE COURSE A GRADE OF "F" WILL APPEAR IN YOUR TRANSCRIPTS.

Final grade will be out of 100 points as follows:
Attendance is out of 60 points. Each class missed equals minus 2 points.  Three tardies equals one absence (-2 points)
Effort and improvement is out of 10 points.
Modern Dance quiz is out of 10 points. (Generally given the ninth week of classes.)
Final Exam is out of 20 points.
Extra Credit:
A maximum of five classes may be made up in any other dance dept. class for a credit of 2 points for each makeup. Have the teacher of the class sign a note or makeup slip (available for Ms. Eckler). Make sure that your name, the date and the length of the class you took is on the note.

You may attend and write a five paragraph review of a modern dance performance (look under resources for upcoming performances). The format of the review must follow the outline provided by the teacher. Worth 4 points if performance is outside the college, 2 points if it is a department performance.

85-100 A
70-84 B
60-69 C
50-59 D
Below 50 F
