This course introduces
students to jazz dance with an emphasis on basic steps and
combinations, terminology, music, and appreciation of dance as a
performing art form. .
The student will:
apply basic dance vocabulary while
learning and demonstrating the technique, styles and performance
aspects of contemporary jazz dance.
use flexibility, strength,
coordination and correct musicality to perform dance routines.
create original combinations using
dance steps utilized in the classes.
practice a form of notation that will
allow the student to memorize combinations and teach them to others.
1. Perform a given beginning jazz dance
combination to musical accompaniment. Demonstrate knowledge of the
movement and the ability to execute it with muscle memory, correct
timing and desired performance quality.
2. Students will identify and name five beginning Jazz Dance steps or

Jazz Dance terminology.
4. Students will work with others to create spatial designs (floor
patterns) using locomotor movement.
5. Students will view and analyze a dance performance in terms of
IF FOR SOME REASON YOU CANNOT COMPLETE THIS COURSE YOU ARE
RESPONSIBLE FOR DROPPING THE CLASS. IF YOU DO NOT OFFICIALLY DROP THE
COURSE BY THE 2ND WEEK OF THE SEMESTER A GRADE OF "W" WILL APPEAR IN
YOUR TRANSCRIPTS. FAILURE TO DROP THE COURSE BEFORE FINALS WILL RESULT
IN A GRADE OF "F".
grade will be out of 100 points as follows:
Attendance/participation is out of 60 points. Each class missed equals minus
3 points. Each late equals minus
1 point. Points can be made up by
participating in other Kinesiology/Dance classes with
the permission of the class teacher up until the 12th week
of the semester (see Extra Credit below)
